Depp, off the reservation

I wish Johnny Depp would find something else to be obsessed with besides Tim Burton and Disney. I'm not opposed to fantastical roles that rely on wild or whimsical costuming, but Depp seems to have taken his love of the make-up kit to the extreme in the last few years. Maybe it is the only thing that can motivate him to try new things, but it is a shame to watch this once bold and unique actor ease back into a safer, more cartoonish version of himself, one that is as predictable as it is endearing.
Since 2007, we've seen Depp voice a cartoon lizard in Rango, sing his way through Sweeney Todd, mime Hunter Thompson again in The Rum Diary, go loop-de-loop as the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, and take vampire kitsch to the 1970s in Dark Shadows, all while donning his pirate hat and salty swagger a few more times for good measure.
And now comes the first trailer for The Lone Ranger with Depp starring opposite Armie Hammer's crime fighting lead as Native American “spirit warrior” Tonto. Bedecked with a black crow atop his skull and drips and drabs of black and white faint covering his face, Depp once again threatens to bring a certain level of lovable lunacy to this action Western. Unfortunately, for those familiar with the Pirates of the Caribbean series—which Ranger director Gore Verbinski also helmed—Depp doesn't reveal anything new to this style of larger-than-life caricature in this early look.
The Lone Ranger is in theaters July 3, 2013. Watch the trailer below:
